Wha's like us... Lulu

HER accent may sometimes sound a little dodgy. And not all of her songs are as notable as her breakthrough 'Shout' ('Run, Rudolph Run' anybody?). But the singer born Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie last week gave hope to us all.

Lulu, who is 60 next month, topped a poll of stars whose looks improve, rather than decline, with age – edging out fading beauties such as Faye Dunaway and Brigitte Bardot to win the title. The singer attributes her glowing looks to a healthy regime that includes yoga and salsa dancing. Although she admits to using Botox in the past, the star has foregone – if not ruled out – cosmetic surgery, preferring the rely on her own brand of skin cream.

Lulu has not only improved with age, her defiance of the ageing process is one in the eye for those who claim that Scots, prone to fair skin and red hair, wrinkle faster than those with Latin blood. It may even be time for us to claim the title of a nation of ageing beauties – after all, the same survey that praised Lulu had Sir Sean Connery at the top of its male list.
