Well-run zoos can pull in the crowds
THOUGH the arrival of the pandas will bring economic benefits in terms of increased visitor numbers, well-run zoos can in themselves become pivotal tourist attractions in their own right for cities and even countries.
Singapore Zoo is listed as one of the city's "must-visit" attractions, while Basel Zoo is the second most-visited attraction in all of Switzerland. Edinburgh Zoo has a similar status, second only to the Castle as the most popular paid-for attraction in Scotland.
Miranda Stevenson, director of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums, said: "Zoos do have a very important impact on the local economy, not just in terms of people coming to see the attractions, but also in terms of the supply chain, creating employment around it." She said UK zoos contributed 3.25 billion a year to the economy.
