Welcome for GP hours extension
PATIENTS have welcomed new guidelines keeping GP surgeries open later and at weekends, NHS Lothian has said.
Speaking after figures showed that nearly two-thirds of GPs have now chosen to sign up to the new contracts, the health board's associate director said the feedback from patients had been positive.
After a slow start in the Lothians, the amendment to contracts is now picking up pace across the area's doctor surgeries.
Dr Nigel Williams said: "Feedback from patients suggests that providing extended opening times is welcome and beneficial, offering them more choice and flexibility. We are very pleased with the number of GP practices which have already signed up to extended opening times."
The British Medical Association in Edinburgh had previously poured cold water on the idea, saying the new rules would only result in the same people going to the GP more often.
