Why go there?

The shopping, the sport, the concerts (both contemporary and classical), the museums. Did I mention the shopping? Girls Aloud play the SECC next month, the Harlem Globetrotters will be at the Braehead Arena and Scottish Opera will be performing Falstaff at the Theatre Royal. Which is about as comprehensive a mix as you could ask for.

How do I get there?

The hotel is around a five-minute walk from Central Station and ten from Queen Street so, depending on how much luggage you have, you might like to grab a cab. If coming by road, take the Charing Cross exit from either the M8 or A82 and turn left on to Sauchiehall Street. At the second set of traffic lights, turn right into Pitt Street – the hotel is three blocks along on the left. From the airport, it's a 20-minute taxi ride or a bit longer (and cheaper) by coach.

Bed test

Crisp white linen, a thick bedspread and a profusion of plump pillows – not to mention the reassuring presence of Strathclyde Police's finest across the road – guaranteed a good night's sleep.

Home comforts

The bathroom is generously equipped with toiletries – you won't go short of shampoo or cotton buds – and guests are encouraged to take the lot home with them. There are also CD players (with a library downstairs should you be in the market for some mood music), satellite TV and free internet access.

What's the food like?

Melt-in-the-mouth red mullet with buttered spinach (15) and a juicy steak (courtesy of George Barbour of Auchengibbert Farm, near Castle Douglas, 18.50) were testament to the Malmaison's efforts at serving up the very best in local ingredients. Breakfast in bed arrived on a vast tray, filled with fruit, cereal, pastries and yoghurt.

Out and about

Staying at Malmaison, you're in a prime position to sample the city's renowned shopping delights. Go a little further for a culture fix at the Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, or take a meander into the Merchant City for its eclectic mix of bars, restaurants and funky shops.

Room for improvement

No robes in the bathroom meant I had to get dressed hastily before letting the room-service waiter in with our breakfast feast.

The bottom line

From 109 for a double room (based on two sharing), all the way up to 295 for a suite. Continental breakfast is extra – 11.95 per head. Check the website for deals – it's the cheapest place to book and often has special offers on room rates.
