AFTER a day of blizzards, snowfalls are expected to ease in the Lothians today – but warnings have been issued of wintry weather returning by the weekend.
As temperatures remained below zero today, black ice warnings were issued for rural roads.
Forecasters said roads and pavements were expected to turn icy overnight as wet and slushy snow surfaces re-froze in many areas.
A Met Office spokesman said: “Strong to gale force easterly winds will drift the snow, especially over high ground where blizzard conditions are expected and could cause further problems in terms of snow clearance.
“Icy stretches will also develop, especially over upland areas, adding to the hazardous conditions.”
More than 20 primary schools in West Lothian and one in East Lothian were forced to shut yesterday as winter conditions took their grip. Heavy snow across the Lothians, causing widespread traffic disruption.
Edinburgh Airport said snow teams worked to keep operations running as normal.
