Weather: Edinburgh battered by gale-force winds

Edinburgh was battered by gale-force winds today, with trees toppled across the city and attractions forced to close their doors.

Winds of up to 100mph have been recorded in Scotland today, and Police were called out to Meadowbank earlier this afternoon after reports of a tree falling onto a parked car.

The weather has seen the Forth Road Bridge closed to high-sided vehicles, cars with trailers, caravans, motorcycles, bicycles and pedestrians. Edinburgh Zoo has also closed for the day because of strong winds, which are forecast to continue throughout the week.

The Met Office issued a "be prepared" warning for the south and central Scotland and a "be aware" warning for the rest of the country.
