We're suckers for Spangles, say consumers
SPANGLES sweets – which were last sold in the early 1980s – have topped a poll of the brands that consumers would most like to see revived, according to an online poll.
The square, translucent boiled sweets produced in a variety of flavours by Mars from the 1950s beat the Marathon bar, Rover cars and British Rail to take the title.
The survey follows the announcement that Cadbury is to bring back the Wispa chocolate bar for good after a campaign on social networking websites demanded its return.
Other nostalgia-inducing brands include the Texan chocolate bar and Triumph cars, the YouGov poll of 2,200 consumers for the Superbrands group found. Consumers placed the rebranding of the Snickers bar back to the original Marathon in second place and wanted to see Starburst sweets returned to their previous label of Opal Fruits.
Stephen Cheliotis, the chairman of the Superbrands Council, said: "In times when the public is used to new brand launches and makeovers all the time, there is a strange nostalgia for things that seemed to have been superseded by a big brand or international positioning exercise."
The brands that consumers would most like to see revived are: Spangles, followed by Marathon and Opal Fruits. Texan bars were in fourth place followed by Rover Cars and British Rail. Aztec, Fry's Five Centres, Cabana and Triumph Cars completed the top ten.
