THE description of “the beast” by Aldie Mackay reported on 14 April, 1933, which started the modern legend of Nessie (The Week, 24 February) is consistent with that of a standing wave, a wake-interference effect which is caused by the disturbance of a calm surface by boat movement out of sight somewhere on the lake.
