I ENJOYED your article on Cultybraggan Camp (21 March). I feel, however, that the death of Wolfgang Rostberg merited more than mention of the “belief by his murderers that his Nazi zeal had waned”. It is my understanding that he was never a member of the Nazi party and as a prisoner of war he risked his life to alert the authorities to the Devizes Plot to free 250,000 PoWs around the UK.
Tragically, due to subsequent bureaucratic errors, he was transferred with the plotters to Cultybraggan, where he was summarily tried by his murderers and executed. I just feel, if true, his courage saved many lives and deserves a richer remembrance.
