Wards closed on bug outbreak

FIVE wards at a Scottish hospital have been closed to new admissions following a rise in cases of the winter vomiting bug, it emerged yesterday.

NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde said the wards at the Victoria Infirmary in Glasgow were not admitting new patients because of an increased incidence of diarrhoea and vomiting – linked to the norovirus bug. Two of the wards affected are general medical wards, while three are used by elderly patients.

Ten patients are showing symptoms of the virus, although none is giving cause for concern. Dr Sarah Whitehead, infection control consultant, said: "Strict infection control measures are in place."
