War against alien plant hots up
NEW measures are set to be unveiled to combat the invasion of an alien plant species in Leith.
Environment Minister Mike Russell was today set to visit the area to launch a scheme aimed at removing Himalayan balsam seedlings – one of the foreign plants threatening Scottish species.
He said: "Alien species are a significant problem and have been identified as the second biggest threat to biodiversity worldwide.
"The invaders can also have a detrimental impact on our economy with agriculture, forestry and fisheries costing the British economy at least 2 billion per year."
