Cowdenbeath 2 - 1 Hearts: Visitors undone by one of their own

Hearts fell to a defeat to Second Division side Cowdenbeath at Central Park last night after Lewis Milne headed in a late winner.

The Blue Brazil stormed ahead in the 23rd minute through a player employed by the visiting club. Jordan Morton, who was named as a trialist ahead of a potential loan move to the Fife outfit, rifled a powerful drive past Jamie MacDonald.

Stephen Elliott brought the top-flight team level after the break with a well-placed penalty but Winter condemned an experimental Hearts team to a narrow friendly loss when he rose high in a crowded box to nod home his side's second.

The Tynecastle club arrived in Cowdenbeath with a mix of youth and experience but were left without the services of first-team striker John Sutton come kick-off after the summer arrival pulled up in the warm-up with a groin complaint. Gordon Smith was promoted to the first XI after initially being named on the bench.

Manager Jim Jefferies did welcome back the versatile Eggert Jonsson for his opening pre-season outing following the Icelandic defender's involvement with his country at the European Under-21 Championships in Denmark and subsequent extended time-off. The sight of Cowdenbeath player/manager Colin Cameron - at the ripe old age of 38 - patrolling the Cowdenbeath midfield no doubt evoked happy memories of Hearts' 1998 Scottish Cup success among the travelling fans.

Cameron's organisational skills were needed in the opening stages with Hearts making a controlled start to the game against the part-timers as they looked to bounce back from Saturday's defeat to German side Union Berlin. Arvydas Novikovas' deep cross eventually dropped to Ryan Stevenson on the edge of the box and he hit a rising left-footed drive just past the post.

Cowdenbeath goalkeeper Youssef Bejaoui then repelled Ryan McGowan's header from close range after the Australian connected with Novikovas' free-kick. The SPL side fell behind through one of their own players when Morton launched a superb shot past goalkeeper MacDonald from the corner of the penalty box in the 23rd minute.

The hosts grew in confidence after taking the lead and former youth team player Greg Stewart clipped the post with a free-kick on the half hour mark. Four minutes later, Stewart spurned the chance to double his side's lead from the penalty spot, pulling his effort wide after sending MacDonald the wrong way.Referee Brian Colvin gave the award when Jon Robertson was fouled by McGowan after racing on to Cameron's cute pass.

Hearts left gaps at the back as they went in search of an equaliser and were left exposed when Stewart ran clear but his shot was saved well by MacDonald before team-mate Robertson lifted Milne's cross over the bar.

Hearts were level in the 70th minute when Elliott found the net from the penalty spot after his jersey was tugged as he attempted to run on to a rebound from Thomas Flynn's save from Ian Black's low shot. However, the hosts wrapped up the win when Winter rose high to head in Marc McKenzie's corner with five minutes left.
