Vitamin supplements 'a waste of money'

MILLIONS of Britons are wasting their money and possibly risking their health by taking vitamin supplements, claims a leading nutritionist.

Multivitamin supplements are pointless for the majority of people on a healthy diet, argued Professor Brian Ratcliffe, who added that topping up on vitamins could prove dangerous.

Safe levels of vitamin A can easily be exceeded, for instance, by taking both vitamin and fish oil supplements. Excess vitamin A, which accumulates in the liver, leads to headaches and nausea, and over a long period increases the risk of osteoporosis.

Large doses of vitamin C may be harmless, but have unpleasant effects on the stomach, said the adviser to the Food Standards Agency.
