Vitamin pill trial for offenders
YOUNG offenders in Scotland are taking part in a four-month study to see whether taking vitamin pills can reduce the number of violent attacks behind bars.
Clinical trials involving prisoners at a young offenders' institution and two others in England will see about 1,000 inmates taking daily vitamin, mineral and fish oil supplements or placebos.
The pill has higher levels of omega 3 fatty acids and magnesium, which experts believe will feed the brain and promote better behaviour among 16 to 21-year-old males.
The 1.45 million study is being funded by the Wellcome Trust and developed by Natural Justice, a charity which carries out research into the causes of criminal behaviour.
