Violent youth crime in Glasgow drops according to new report

Serious violent crime committed by young people in Scotland's biggest city has dropped by almost a quarter over the course of a year, a new report has revealed.

Glasgow's Youth Justice Services, which has analysed Strathclyde Police figures, found that attempted murders, serious assaults, robberies and threats committed by people aged under 18 fell by 22 per cent over the course of 2009-10.

It is the second year in succession that serious crime has fallen among teenagers in Glasgow, and there has now been a 31 per cent drop since 2007-8.

Overall, the number of offences committed by under-18s dropped by 7 per cent last year.

During 2009-10, 1,817 children and young people were referred to the children's reporter for 4,198 offences.

A total of 11,895 crimes were committed by those under the age of 18 compared with 12,786 in 2008-9.
