Vikings lead torchlight procession

VIKINGS from Lerwick's Up Helly Aa celebrations led the annual torchlit procession through the Capital's streets as the Hogmanay celebrations began in earnest.

An estimated 15,000 watched the procession wind through the city centre streets from Parliament Square to Calton Hill.

Lord Provost Lesley Hinds and Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh were on hand to launch the event and hand out torches to revellers arriving for the parade of fire.

Providing entertainment to keep participants' spirits high was the Barnton and Dalkeith Pipe Band, the Coalburn Pipes and Drums, and the Trinity Occasional.
