Stuart McMorrow answers your pet health queries
Q: My Boxer Sonja is quite a fussy eater – she won’t eat dry food unless it has tuna juice on it! She does like wet food but I’m not sure what is best for her.
A: I would recommend that you take Sonja for a health check with your vet to make sure that there isn’t a medical reason for her fussy eating, such as a dental problem. If your dog gets a clean bill of health, the cause may be that she’s learnt that if she doesn’t eat her dry food, you will add tuna juice and maybe give her extra attention. So this gives her a nice reward for refusing to eat her dinner! If this is the case, leave her dinner down for about 15 to 20 minutes and then remove it if it’s not eaten. Offer a fresh bowl of food a few hours later and keep doing this until she eventually eats it.
