Vermin a pest to hospitals

PEST control services were called to NHS Lothian premises more than 100 times in the last six months.

The Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Morningside had the most call-outs for problems with vermin and insects with 39 visits, while the nearby Astley Ainslie had 18 reports. The Western General had 13, with five going to St John's Hospital in Livingston.

The call-outs cost almost 2,000. Health chiefs said the "woodland" setting of some buildings drove up the numbers.
