Usher Hall wins £5m bail-out
A £5 MILLION bail-out for the troubled project to refurbish Edinburgh's flagship concert hall is expected to be agreed today.
Senior councillors in the Lib Dem-SNP administration have agreed to find the money to complete the ten-year revamp of the Usher Hall in time for this year's Edinburgh International Festival.
The second phase of a lengthy refurbishment will now cost 25 million – more than three times the original estimate.
Insiders at the council say the use of the Usher Hall for this year's Festival would have been in doubt had the extra 5 million not been found. One source said: "The rise in costs could not have been foreseen a couple of years ago. The priority now is to get the project finished as quickly as possible."
Councillors are set to give final backing to the bail-out at today's budget meeting .
