Up and coming: Flesh

Who are Flesh?

A poptastic underground duo, comprising Sharon Martin on vocals and Stephen Lironi covering just about everything else.

Credentials?

Lironi, who just happens to be Mr Claire Grogan, was guitarist with Altered Images before moving on to a successful career as a producer. Singer/songwriter Martin proved she was the vocalist to front Lironi's latest pop odyssey with her cover of the Vic Godard song Make Me Sad, recorded to accompany (and we really hope this is true) her honours thesis on the influence that Vic Godard & The Subway Sect had on the Scottish music scene, following their 1977 appearance in Edinburgh on the bill of The Clash's White Riot tour - a gig that ultimately spawned Orange Juice, Josef K and Postcard Records. Plus, she sings like Sharleen Spiteri, if she got the funk.

Punk and funk, you say?

New single Internal Ops rocks a feelgood Studio 54 groove with its Chic guitars, disco strings and seductive vocal, boding well for the debut album, Sick Electricity, which follows in November and features a cameo from Suicide's Alan Vega.

Any other pertinent business?

According to their Myspace page, Flesh have 192 billion friends, one of whom is Luis Bunuel. A (dead) man of good taste.

What are other people saying?

"Flesh are brash, bright as a button that says play, and wear their 1980s iconography on their dressed-up sleeves" – The List

• Internal Ops is released by the Creeping Bent Organisation on 30 August
