University supercomputer Hector to get vital upgrade
EDINBURGH University's supercomputer Hector is set to be upgraded by American company Cray Inc.
Cray has signed a contract with the university and the upgrade and expansion will provide high performance computing (HPC) services for users of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.
Hector - High-End Computing Terascale Resource - is the UK's national supercomputing service. The work is expected to be completed later this year.
Dr Ulla Thiel, Cray's vice president, Europe, said: "Upgrading the Hector system will provide continuity, allowing researchers to maintain their focus on pushing the frontiers of science. Hector is at the forefront of HPC in Europe and we are honoured to be supporting its efforts."
