Union joins calls to keep school kitchens open

UNION leaders have joined calls for Edinburgh City Council to reverse its decision to axe primary school and nursery kitchens.

Unison, which represents school meals staff, has attacked the council's proposals to save money by cutting back on hot meals.

The city council is considering a U-turn on closing kitchens in six primary schools after reports that more pupils were taking them. But it is still pushing ahead with plans to cut facilities in 18 nursery schools.

Agnes Petkevicius, Unison's Edinburgh secretary, said: "This means that kids often will not get a hot meal, as the school lunch was their only one of the day, especially for those on free school meals.

"It also means that many school meals staff will have their hours cut to below 16 per week – with serious consequences for their take-home pay, and qualification for many statutory benefits."
