Union blamed for pay woes

COUNCIL leaders said today they had "no option" but to impose a pay deal on tens of thousands of local authority workers.

The move will mean that council staff across the country will have a pay rise of 0.65 per cent this financial year, but will see their salaries frozen for the next two years.

A better earlier offer was "overwhelmingly" rejected by members of trade union Unison. Leaders of Unite said they would now consider consulting with members over possible industrial action.

Councillor Michael Cook, of Cosla, said union opposition had left the organisation in an "impossible position".
