UK News: Tan 'worth sunburn risk'

ALMOST half of people got sunburnt this summer and many would be willing to risk it again in their search for a tan, a survey has suggested today.

Some 46 per cent of people questioned got burnt over the holiday months, with 32 per cent of those saying they had been trying to get a tan.

Fairer beer tax 'would boost jobs and revenue'

A FAIRER tax system for beer would help to create 30,000 jobs and boost the Treasury's coffers, an industry body said today.

The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) said taxing alcohol according to its strength would create thousands of jobs and bring in around 250 million in extra revenues from employment taxes and corporation tax.

BBPA chief executive Brigid Simmonds said a fair deal for beer "would create a win-win situation for all".

Girls think they're better

GIRLS as young as four think they are cleverer, try harder and are better behaved than boys, research suggests.

By the age of seven and eight, boys also believe that their female classmates are more likely to have these qualities.

The study, by academics at Kent University, warns that children's beliefs can become a "self-fulfilling prophecy" and influence achievement.

32 schools to reopen with academy status

Just 32 schools will reopen as academies this month after taking Education Secretary Michael Gove up on his offer to apply for the status.

Mr Gove wrote to every school in England inviting them to apply for academy status and the Government passed a new Bill to allow schools to take up the offer.

Aberystwyth: A 21-year-old man remained in police custody today after the car he was driving plunged down an embankment into a lake, killing two teenagers. Anwen Busby, 16, and Jai Burkes, 19, died in the crash on the A44 at Ponterwyd yesterday.
