White cliffs get new champion

the white cliffs of Dover now have their own writer-in-residence. Julian Baggini has been commissioned by the National Trust to spend a week at the cliffs exploring through verse what the stretch of the Kent coast says about the UK.

The writer and philosopher, who will be based at South Foreland Lighthouse, was born in nearby Folkestone and his mother is from Dover.

“The white cliffs are a clear symbol of Britain, in much the same way the Statue of Liberty has defined America,” he said.
