Vivienne Westwood slates bad dress sense
People have never dressed as badly as they do now, Dame Vivienne Westwood said yesterday, as she revealed she does not like some of the clothes in her collections.
Showcasing the autumn/winter line of her Red Label brand at London Fashion Week, she said the rise of disposable fashion means people look too similar.
She said: “In history people dressed much better than we do today. If you saw Queen Elizabeth it would be amazing. She was so attractive in what she was wearing. People have never looked so ugly as they do today regarding their dress.
“We are so conformist, nobody is thinking. We have been trained to be consumers and we are all consuming far too much.
“I’m a fashion designer and people think ‘what do I know?’ but I’m talking about all this disposable crap.
“So I’m saying buy less, choose well, make it last. Everybody looks like clones and the only people you notice are my age. I don’t notice anybody unless they look great, and every now and again they do, and they are usually 70.”
Dame Vivienne said delegating some of her designs means sometimes she ends up being unhappy with how they look.
“Recently, I said I don’t even like some of my clothes. I like the stuff going out now but you have to be very careful, when you delegate stuff, things can become not very good.”
The fashion designer’s latest collection, which she showed at My Beautiful Fashion at Goldsmith’s Hall, central London, was met by rapturous applause from a crowd that included Duran Duran musician Nick Rhodes, celebrity chef Heston Blumenthal, model and actress Sadie Frost and model Janice Dickinson.
The first model graced the catwalk in a raincoat and headscarf similar to those worn by the Queen.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 05:56 PM"jeans and trainers and a top ". Flakey, that too is a uniform. We all wear uniforms of one sort or another, even old gits like me. And people estimate us by the clothes we wear, the car we drive, whether we buy these things deliberately or not.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 05:52 PMElizabethan 'disposable fashion' was what the serfs wore. All day, every day until it fell to bits. ================================================== She's right about conformity - right now you can't help trip over girls in black tights or leggings, and shorts. But as she's well aware, these trends are set well in advance by the fashion industry itself. They're set by what the companies put in the shops. i.e. clothes companies don't compete with haute couture, they simply observe, then put out stuff at a fraction of the price and they suck people in. ================================================== If you want to see the worst of fashion, simply look at people out on the razzle at the weekend.

Monday, February 20, 2012 at 01:52 PMMaybe folk are no longer sheep...following the over priced fashion rubbish. Now we wear what we want, when we want without paying out large ammounts for ugly designer clothes. It is our choice what we wear, we don't need people telling us what we have to wear....... Tomboy for life me, jeans and trainers and a top of course
