Viagra offers Crohn's hope

THE anti-impotence drug Viagra could help in the treatment of people with the inflammatory bowel disorder Crohn's disease, researchers said yesterday.

To test the inflammatory response to bacteria, the researchers injected a harmless form of E coli under the skin of patients.

In healthy controls, blood flow in the area of inflammation increased roughly ten-fold over 24 hours.

But Crohn's patients had much lower blood flow. The scientists found Viagra could correct this phenomenon.
