FORMER Tory leadership contender David Davis has demanded a “mandate referendum” on the UK’s relationship with the EU as he insisted that Britain’s links with Europe had to “dramatically change”.
The former Shadow Home Secretary, speaking on the Andrew Marr show, called on David Cameron to negotiate a new deal with the EU and put it before voters within the next 12 months.
However, the UK’s Lib Dem business secretary Vince Cable on the same programme said that it would be “potentially damaging” to alter the UK’s relationship with the EU.
Mr Davis said: “We’ve got to dramatically change our relationship with Europe.
“It’s got to be done almost straight away - within the next 12 months or so.
“We need to have a mandate referendum.
“We don’t want Europe delving into our legislation.”
