Success rate of fertility treatment on the rise
MORE women are having fertility treatment, with success rates rising, figures show.
The number of women having treatment rose nearly 6 per cent to 32,626 in 2005 from 30,861 in 2004, the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority said.
The overall live birthrate for all IVF treatment was 21.6 per cent, up 0.9 per cent from 2004. However, the figures showed wide variations across Scotland. The UK success rate for under-35s using their own fresh eggs was 29.6 per cent. But at the Glasgow Nuffield it fell to 25.3 per cent, while in Aberdeen it was 24.5 per cent.
The Edinburgh Assisted Conception Unit had the highest success rate for under-35s at 38.4 per cent.
Some clinics may treat more patients with more complex issues, which may account for lower rates.
