Stock market pioneer dies in Swiss clinic

A BUSINESSWOMAN who pioneered the right of women to join the London Stock Exchange before retiring to East Lothian chose to end her life at a controversial assisted suicide clinic in Switzerland, it was claimed today.

Financial columnist and broadcaster Elisabeth Rivers-Bulkeley is said to have decided to end her life at the Dignitas clinic in Zurich.

The terminally-ill 82-year-old, who retired with her husband to a house in the grounds of Gosford House in Aberlady eight years ago, was reportedly a member of Friends at the End, a society promoting "end-of-life" choices.

After a long illness and being told by doctors that she only had six months to live, she is said to have visited the centre.

Mrs Rivers-Bulkeley, who was born in Austria but spent much of her working life in London, is reported to have spent months collecting the necessary paperwork before travelling to the clinic and ending her life on December 19.
