Spark's 40-year-old novel in running for Booker Prize

THE late Dame Muriel Spark is shortlisted for a one-off "lost" Man Booker Prize to honour a great novel four decades on.

The Scottish writer joins three other late authors on the list of six for the prize, which is being awarded for books published in 1970.

Unlike the usual prize, the award for those books which have stood the test of time will now be voted for by the public.

The shortlisted novels are: The Birds on the Trees by Nina Bawden; Troubles by JG Farrell; The Bay of Noon by Shirley Hazzard; Fire From Heaven by Mary Renault; The Driver's Seat by Muriel Spark; and The Vivisector by Patrick White.

Due to a change in eligibility for the award shortly after it was established, books published in 1970 were not considered.
