Salmonella forces sweets factory closure

A SWEETS factory has been shut down after a salmonella scare, it emerged yesterday. Fox's Confectionery halted production at its plant in Leicester following the discovery on 15 October.

It is understood that contaminated nuts - used in its Just Brazils product range - were found during routine testing at the plant. The firm said no tainted products had left the facility - where Fox's Glacier mints, Paynes Poppets and XXX Mints are also made.

A Food Standards Agency spokesman said: "From the information we have, we are satisfied that the affected stock has been isolated and has not reached consumers."

Full production is expected to resume later this week.

Mario Giannotta, chief executive of Fox's, said: "We want to reassure all of our customers once again that no affected product whatsoever was released and that stocks on retailers' shelves are completely safe."
