Sales of vitamins slump

SALES of vitamins and minerals have slumped as Britons have slashed their costs by turning back to old-style healthy diets full of fresh fruit and vegetables, a report shows today.

The latest data from market research analysts Mintel finds the number of people relying on supplements for their vitamin and mineral intake is on the decline in the economic downturn.

It says that the UK's 396 million market for vitamins and supplements is set to be a victim of its own nutrition agenda. Improved education on diet and nutrition has been a root cause of the downturn. The number of Britons taking supplements has been in steady decline since 2007, with the total number of users falling from 43 per cent in 2006 to 41 per cent in 2008. The number of people taking supplements once a day or more has declined from 34 per cent to 32 per cent.

More than two-thirds (67 per cent) of Britons enjoy a healthy diet, while almost half (46 per cent) stick to the five-a-day rule, according to the research.
