Safety alert on mouthwash

CUSTOMERS were warned yesterday of safety fears over numerous brands of mouthwash.

A total of 17 products were recalled after routine tests identified a "microbiological problem".

The maker, Robert McBride Ltd, said people who had bought bottles should return them as a "precautionary measure".

Among the products affected are Asda, Morrisons and Tesco own-brand mouthwashes, as well as Dentyl and Dentimint.

Adverts were placed in newspapers yesterday by Robert McBride detailing which products were affected and giving advice to customers. There is also a helpline, on 0800 917 1187.

The Manchester-based company said: "Our routine safety testing has identified a microbiological problem. As a precaution, customers are advised not to use the product and return it to the store where purchased for a full refund."

A spokesman said it was unlikely the problem would cause harm and the firm had received no reports of any ill-effects. But there was an "outside risk" it could affect people with chest infections or a susceptibility to lung infections.
