Real ban on virtual TV ad from Toyota

A CAR advert featuring a “virtual” motorist bursting his vehicle on to a real road through a glass barrier from an animated world has been banned… for condoning dangerous driving.

The Toyota GT86 advert, with the slogan “the Real Deal”, attracted two viewer complaints. Toyota claimed the ad, featuring a computer animation of a man powering a car through narrow streets before “becoming real” when he breaks through the barrier, did not condone or encourage unsafe or irresponsible driving.

But the Advertising Standards Authority ruled the high-speed driving portrayed could be emulated on real roads, that the stylised ad glamourised reckless motoring and was, therefore, “irresponsible and condoned dangerous driving”. It banned the ad in its present form.
