Power of thought helps the severely disabled 'speak'

PATIENTS with severe brain injuries who are left unable to speak or move are being helped to communicate with the power of thought, it emerged yesterday.

Dr Paul Gnanayutham, a researcher at the University of Portsmouth, has developed a system that uses a patients' brainwaves, and eye and muscular movements to move a cursor on a computer screen. This can help them give simple answers, as well as control electrical devices and use the internet.

Dr Gnanayutham hopes to get more funding to make his system more widely available. It works via probes on a band worn round the head, picking up brainwaves and muscle and eye movements.
