Poll to find Mandelson successor
THOUSANDS of voters were today taking to the polls in the Hartlepool by-election to find a successor to Peter Mandelson.
The by-election was called after Mr Mandelson stepped down to take up a post as EU Commissioner.
The borough has a population of 88,600, with the electorate for today’s by-election put at 68,517.
The Labour candidate is 32-year-old father-of-three Iain Wright, a local councillor representing the town’s Rift House ward.
A total of 14 candidates, representing groups including the Green, UKIP, Respect and Fathers 4 Justice groups, are standing.
