PM backs £5bn aircraft carriers
GORDON Brown yesterday moved to quell concerns that the future of the £5 billion aircraft carriers project was under threat.
The Prime Minister was challenged over the future of the two 65,000-tonne new carriers during Prime Minister's questions.
The question by Glasgow North West MP John Robertson came just a day after Defence Secretary Bob Ainsworth had said that the carriers would be subject to the strategic defence review and could not be guaranteed.
But the Prime Minister said: "We are committed to the aircraft carriers and to the programme that is necessary to the Navy."
