Oil transfers block moves closer
NEW powers enabling ministers to freeze plans for a controversial oil shipment operation yesterday passed their penultimate parliamentary hurdle.
The change to the Habitats Directive was agreed by Holyrood's subordinate legislation committee, and will go before parliament tomorrow. If passed, the new regulation would enable ministers to call in plans which may affect protected sites - such as the planned ship-to-ship oil transfers in the Forth.
Forth Ports Authority currently rules on proposals which would see 7.8 million tonnes of crude pumped each year between tankers off the coast.
