Ofcom launch online aid to deal with nuisance calls and messages
MORE than 30,000 complaints have been received about spam texts and recorded message calls to mobile and landline phones over the last six months – leading to a crackdown on nuisance calls.
The Information Commission is calling on victims of spam texts to help identify the culprits by registering details on its website.
And regulator Ofcom has published a guide for consumers on how to protect themselves against nuisance calls and messages and how to make a complaint. The guide has been written in collaboration with the Information Commissioner’s Office, the Office of Fair Trading, the Ministry of Justice and the Telephone Preference Service and is available to download now from the Ofcom website.
If you receive a text from a company you know, or from an anonymous five digit short code, the guide advises you can prevent any repeat by replying with the word “STOP”.
If the text message is from an unknown company or organisation then Ofcom recommends that you do not reply, as responding will confirm that the number is active and might result in more messages
