Number of children with meningitis at record low

THE number of children suffering from the three main strains of meningitis has fallen to a record low, the Government announced today.

Health Secretary Alan Johnson hailed the success of three vaccines that are used to fight the most common types of meningitis.

Since the Hib (Haemophilus influenzae type b) vaccine was introduced in 1992, cases of the disease, which can cause meningitis, have dropped by 99 per cent.
