NHS told to meet greenhouse gas targets

THE NHS will be ordered to meet new targets to improve energy efficiency and cut greenhouse gas emissions.

The move, announced yesterday, follows the publication of the first study of carbon dioxide emissions across the health service, which revealed the NHS accounts for one-quarter of the public-sector total.

Health secretary Nicola Sturgeon said: "Scotland is rightly proud of having enacted the most ambitious climate change legislation in the world.

"But all organisations, including the NHS, must play their part if we are to reach our goal of an 80 per cent emissions cut by 2050."

The study, based on figures gathered between 1990 and 2004, showed that the NHS accounted for 2.63 megatonnes of – about 3.6 per cent of Scotland's total.
