NHS staff threaten strike over pay deal

HEALTH staff are to stage a "work to rule" next month and will take strike action in the New Year unless a three-year pay deal is improved, it was announced yesterday.

The Unite union said mental health nurses, paramedics and ambulance staff will be involved in the UK-wide protest on 3 Dec-ember, including bans on non-essential paperwork, attending meetings and on phone calls.

The union, which has 77,000 NHS members, warned the government that if a "derisory" three-year pay deal worth around 8 per cent was not improved, industrial action will be ratcheted up in the New Year "up to and including strike action".

Derek Simpson, the joint general secretary, said: "The government's strategy on the economy doesn't fit with its strategy on public sector pay. Our members voted to take action for the first time and the government should take serious notice."
