New bird flu drug trials due
A NEW breakthrough drug that could prevent a bird flu pandemic is due to be trialled on humans.
The compound, known as T-705, has also been shown in lab tests to fight swine flu, giving its discovery wide-ranging implications for health authorities around the world.
At present, patients who contract the H5N1 virus are treated with Tamiflu – the same drug given to people with swine flu.
Virologist Professor Yoshihiro Kawaoka said:
"H5N1 virus is so pathogenic Tamiflu doesn't protect all the infected animals. This compound works much better, even three days after infection."
