Morrissey still ill in hospital after collapsing on stage

THE singer Morrissey was last night rushed to hospital after dramatically collapsing on stage. The former frontman of The Smiths fell unconscious just one song into a concert in Swindon.

Eyewitness reports described him as struggling through a rendition of The Smiths hit This Charming Man, before slumping to his knees and blacking out. He then appears to have been helped by two band members, who dragged him from the stage.

The incident is the latest in a series of health-related problems for the 50-year-old, who has cancelled a number of performances, apparently due to illness.

Among the cancelled shows have been concerts in Birmingham's Symphony Hall, London's Royal Albert Hall, and the four opening dates of his world tour, which were due to be performed in Florida. He also dropped out of a scheduled appearance on Later... With Jools Holland in May.

The singer, whose real name is Steven Patrick Morrissey, was admitted to the Great Western Hospital, Swindon, last night. His condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

A hospital spokesman said: "Morrissey has been admitted to the Great Western Hospital. He is being reviewed by the medical staff and his condition is stable."
