MI5 issues warning on Chinese espionage

MI5's director-general has warned business leaders China has been carrying out state-sponsored espionage against British banks and financial services firms, it was reported last night.

Jonathan Evans sent a confidential letter to 300 executives and security chiefs at banks, accountants and legal firms this week warning them their computer systems were under attack from "Chinese state organisations".

It is believed to be the first time the government has directly accused China of involvement in web-based espionage. A security expert said that among the techniques used by Chinese groups were "custom trojans", software designed to hack into the network of a particular firm and feed back confidential data.

A Home Office spokeswoman said: "We do not comment on private correspondence."
