Members of alleged Eta cell held in London

THREE alleged members of the violent Basque separatist group Eta arrested in Britain yesterday were awaiting orders to commit attacks in Spain, a court was told.

The two men and a woman had formed a "reserve cell" after a former "command" was dismantled, City of Westminster magistrates heard.

They were taken to London after being held in Sheffield by Metropolitan Police and South Yorkshire Police officers.

They were named as Zigor Ruiz Jaso, alias "Lukas", 28, Inigo Maria Albisu Hernandez, 23, and Ana Isabel Lopez Monge, 36.

The court heard Spain wanted them for alleged participation in a criminal organisation and terrorism.

Melanie Cumberland, representing the Spanish judicial authority, said Ruiz was alleged to have been the author of a February 2006 attack, for which Eta claimed responsibility, in Motrico, Spain. It caused no injuries but damaged property.

The three were remanded in custody until Tuesday.
