McCartney backs post office closure campaign

FORMER Beatle Sir Paul McCartney has backed a campaign to stop the closure of a post office near one of his homes.

In the statement from Sir Paul, which was read by his brother Mike outside the post office on Village Road, he said: “This village post office is a vital part of local community life and as such should be saved for future generations to cherish.

“Its 100-year history should not be cast aside lightly. I agree with thousands of local people who feel that everything must be done to save it. Please help!”

Mike McCartney said he and Sir Paul have been using the post office since 1964.

He said: “It’s very important our kid comes aboard and we have a voice that is recognised throughout the world. It’s very important to stop it going any further. This was the first post office in Heswall.”

MP Mr Chapman said more than 3,000 people have signed a petition against the proposed closure of the two post offices in his constituency.

He said: “I am encouraging people to do two things: to sign the petition which I am going to present to Parliament, but also to respond to the consultation.

“This is a much-used post office bringing trade to the village and there is a massive hill to the alternative, which elderly people and other people just can’t manage. People also live down the hill from here and have already climbed.”

Mr Chapman said he remained confident that the proposed closures could be put off.

A spokeswoman for Royal Mail said: “Each Area Plan will be subject to a six-week public consultation period. Then all the feedback will be looked at before making a final decision.”
