Mandelson to quit EU post
PETER Mandelson, one of Tony Blair's most trusted confidantes, is to quit as EU trade commissioner months after Gordon Brown is expected to be crowned Prime Minister.
The former minister said he would not seek another term in the post.
His remarks will rekindle suspicions Mr Brown is difficult to work with, after Lord Turnbull, a former Cabinet secretary, described him as "Stalinist".
Mr Brown has not forgiven Mr Mandelson for switching his support from him to Mr Blair in the run-up to the 1994 Labour leadership contest. Mr Blair's ultimate act of vengeance would be to include Mr Mandelson in his resignation honours list.
