Lotto couple gift £100k to sport centre
THE UK’s biggest ever EuroMillions winners have donated more than £100,000 to developing a new sports facility in their home town.
Colin, 64, and Chris Weir, 56, who won £161 million last year in the draw, announced yesterday they have donated £102,000 to help refurbish the National Sports Training Centre in Largs.
The couple previously gave £1m to the SNP to help fund Alex Salmond’s campaign for independence.
Their latest donation enabled outdoor facilities at the centre, including tennis courts and football pitches, to be refurbished.
Mr Weir said: “The centre holds a very important place in the community. As well as attracting school kids and sports men and women from all over Scotland to Largs, it is a tremendous facility for local people to keep fit and enjoy the camaraderie and passion of sport.
“That’s why we were delighted to help out when we heard that the all-purpose surfaces needed replacing. Having seen the new pitches, they look ideal and it is fantastic to see so many people making the most of them.”
John Kent, sportscotland’s principal of the National Sports Training Centre at Inverclyde, said: “This is extremely generous of them.”
